415. Give of Your Best to the Master 獻上至好的

Jesus gave Himself up on the cross, shed His previous blood as a ransom for our sin. He laid down His own life without murmur just to save us. Is this not the very best He gave to us all? In return for this amazing and wonderful gift, we shall offer our best to the Lord. Offer our strength while we still can to do His work. Give Jesus first place in our heart. This lovely hymn tells and reminds us, can we wholeheartedly give the best to our Lord Jesus?

402. God’s Way 神的道路

Quite often, we may not see that God’s way is the best way. God has laid out our path for us to walk on. His way is always the best as only He knows what is the best for us. If Gd is previous in our life, we should trust and cling to Him. He will be our guide and protection in our faith journey. A bit different than before, this hymn is arranged in two parts. Why not have a go and find out whether God’s way is your best way!

He ever is seeking My gold to refine,

434. Just Over in the Gloryland 在那榮耀國度

When you are away from home for a while, working, studying or even on holiday, have you ever thought of when you can return to your cosy lovely home? As Christians, we know that our home is not on this earth, but glorious heavenly eternal home prepares for us by our Lord Jesus. There will be no sorrows and troubles, only joy and happiness, singing praises to our almighty God day and night. This joyous hymn just reminds us where our thought should be. Not difficult to learn to play. Why not have a go yourself.

58. He Leadeth Me 耶穌領我

Can you remember when we were infants, our parents hold our hands? Safeguarding that we would not fall or trip, especially holding tight to our hands when we cross the road. Our heavenly Father is doing just that in our everyday life. When we sing and play this hymn, it gives us a pretty good memory of how His loving hand guide and protect us in our every step. We therefore need to be faithful and continue to follow and walk with our Lord, as He is still holding us with His own hand in our faith journey towards the heavenly kingdom. Hallelujah, praise the Lord!

1. Holy, Holy, Holy 頌讚獨一真神

Hallelujah, praise the Lord! Hymn no. 1 Holy, Holy, Holy. Piano Tutorial 31 starts off with wider compass for the left hand. Recall starting this series, I try to find the ones that are very simple for the left hand, mainly ones that only involve five fingers so that we can concentrate our focus on the melodious right hand. Since then, we moved on further with extension to the left thumb and little finger as well as adding more notes and chords to the accompaniment. I have been waiting to share with you all this hymn for a long time. I feel now is the time to explore more challenging left hand, moving away from the safe and comfort zone for notes that are around the five fingers.

This well known hymn tells of all creations of heaven and earth sing praises to the almighty Lord God who rules over all. I do hope that everyone will enjoy learning this hymn and give praises to our heavenly Lord.

427. We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations 有一故事傳給萬邦

Can you remember any stories you have heard from your parents or grandparents? May be bed-time stories? Surely all of us must have, a few or many. Some of these stories may be funny, amazing or at times, scary. As the children of God, we all have the mission to tell to all nations about our Lord Jesus, who came to this world with love and light. The verses of this hymn tell of how He can help and transform us. The chorus is like believers marching from darkness to light, leading to where our Lord Jesus has prepared for all – the heavenly kingdom.

We’ve a story to tell to the nations,
That shall turn their hearts to the right,
A story of truth and sweetness,
A story of peace and light,
A story of peace and light.

Hymn 228 Keepers of the Word Are Blessed, also know as “All for Jesus”. This hymn has 4 lines. The two lines of the verse are the same, and the two lines of the chorus are also the same.

First, let us look at the harmonies of the first line. Bars 1,2 and 4 are chord I, Bar 3 is chord V.

Bar 1 and bar 2 > chord I, a bass note and chords, one minim and one crotchet.

Bar 3 > chord V, same pattern, a bass and 2 chords.

Bar 4 > same as the 1^st 3 bars, a bass and 2 chords. This can go for line 2 as well.

Last session, we shared the idea of bringing the right-hand melody down an octave, and splitting the left hand playing a bass note follows by crossing over the right-hand, playing the 2 chords above the melody, like this

You can practice both ways, the normal, or the cross-hand.

This works either way, it is up to you what you would like to do, I am just giving you some ideas.

Now the chorus. Chords for this line are chord IV, chord I, chord V and chord I again. We will use arpeggios for this line.

Bar 9 > notice the melody has a dotted crotchet follows by 5 quavers, we could do 8 quavers, or less, may be a mixture of quavers or crotchets? In the example, we will use 2 quavers and a minim.

Bar 10 > melody has 2 minims, we will use 4 quavers tied over a crotchet, and finishes with another crotchet.

* You can see from bar 9 and bar 10, I am filling up the longer space, the dotted crotchet and minims, with some movement on the left-hand, remember the idea of movement is important!

Bar 11 > we can do the same as bar 9.

Bar 12 > we can play ascending arpeggios like bars 9, 10 and 11. However, it may be more interesting if we reverse and play a descending passage. This needs a bit of calculation and working out so that the descending passage finishes on a Bb at the beginning of the next bar, a mixture of arpeggio and scale.

The fourth line, harmonies are the same as the previous line, line 3. To have a stronger ending to conclude this hymn, we will use the bass note and chords idea that we have been using previously.

Bar 13 > chord IV, a bass note and 2 chords.

Bar 14 > chord I, a bass note and 2 chords.

Bar 15 > chord V, a bass note and 2 chords.

Bar 16 > chord I, we can do a reverse, a chord first, then a bass note.

So, take the 2 lines from the chorus, you may want to have a gentle start using arpeggios for the first line. Follows by a stronger ending using bass note and chords.

We can also do this

Play the bass note and chords for the 1^st line, and arpeggios for the following line. It works equally well if we do the opposite. Beginning strong, rounding off with a softer ending. Of course, we then need to adjust the ending of these 2 lines to fit in correctly.

* Remember, these tutorial videos are providing ideas and suggestions for you to explore, there is really no right or wrong, you just have to try them out yourself.

To summarise, line 1 and 2, right-hand plays the melody an octave lower. We will do cross over left-hand accompaniment. Move right-hand melody back to normal for chorus, line 3 with arpeggio patterns. Line 4 will use the previous style of a bass note and chords.

Below are version A and version B which you can switch round to suit the need.

Have you been to a beautiful garden before? There you will find peace and quiet with wonderful calm surrounding. This hymn tells of our Lord Jesus who is waiting in this beautiful garden. Gate opens and awaits our arrival where we can walk and talk with our Lord Jesus, telling Him all our burden and sorrow. He will listen tenderly and answer our prayers and requests. Why don’t we all go to that beautiful garden!

Hallelujah, praise the Lord! There Shall Be Showers of Blessing by James McGranahan. His blessing revive and refresh us, just like abundant rain falling over the hills and valleys, making everything grow and flourish. The used of many quavers repetition in this hymn simulate showers of mercy and love from our Lord Jesus from above. We pray and He listens to our daily plead. May the Lord continue to shower His blessing bountifully to all believers.
