As Christians, we know that our home is not on this earth, but glorious heavenly eternal home prepares for us by our Lord Jesus. There will be no sorrows and troubles, only joy and happiness, singing praises to our almighty God day and night. This joyous hymn just reminds us where our thought should be. I’ve a home prepared where the saints abide, Just over in the glory land;
And I long to be by my Saviour’s side, Just over in the glory land.
Just over in the glory land, I’ll join the happy angel band,
Just over in the glory land;
Just over in the glory land, There with the mighty host I’ll stand,
Just over in the glory land.

I am on my way to those mansions fair, Just over in the glory land;
There to sing God’s praise and His glory share; Just over in the glory land.
Just over in the glory land, I’ll join the happy angel band,
Just over in the glory land;
Just over in the glory land, There with the mighty host I’ll stand,
Just over in the glory land.

What a joyful thought that my Lord I’ll see, Just over in the glory land;
And with kindred saved, there forever be, Just over in the glory land.
Just over in the glory land, I’ll join the happy angel band,
Just over in the glory land;
Just over in the glory land, There with the mighty host I’ll stand,
Just over in the glory land.

With the bloodwashed throng I will shout and sing, Just over in the glory land;
Glad hosannas to Christ, the Lord and King, Just over in the glory land.
Just over in the glory land, I’ll join the happy angel band,
Just over in the glory land;
Just over in the glory land, There with the mighty host I’ll stand,
Just over in the glory land.

58. He Leadeth Me 耶穌領我

Can you remember when we were infants, our parents hold our hands? Safeguarding that we would not fall or trip, especially holding tight to our hands when we cross the road. Our heavenly Father is doing just that in our everyday life. When we sing and play this hymn, it gives us a pretty good memory of how His loving hand guide and protect us in our every step. We therefore need to be faithful and continue to follow and walk with our Lord, as He is still holding us with His own hand in our faith journey towards the heavenly kingdom. Hallelujah, praise the Lord!

He leadeth me! O blessed tho’t!
O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me!
He leadeth me, He leadeth me, By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful foll’wer I would be, For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes ‘mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters still, o’er troubled sea,
Still ’tis His hand that leadeth me!
He leadeth me, He leadeth me, By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful foll’wer I would be, For by His hand He leadeth me.

Lord, I would place my hand in Thine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine,
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since ’tis my God that leadeth me!
He leadeth me, He leadeth me, By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful foll’wer I would be, For by His hand He leadeth me.

And when my task on earth is done,
When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since God thro’ Jordan leadeth me!
He leadeth me, He leadeth me, By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful foll’wer I would be, For by His hand He leadeth me.

1. Holy, Holy, Holy 頌讚獨一真神

Hallelujah, praise the Lord! Hymn no. 1 Holy, Holy, Holy. Piano Tutorial 31 starts off with wider compass for the left hand. Recall starting this series, I try to find the ones that are very simple for the left hand, mainly ones that only involve five fingers so that we can concentrate our focus on the melodious right hand. Since then, we moved on further with extension to the left thumb and little finger as well as adding more notes and chords to the accompaniment. I have been waiting to share with you all this hymn for a long time. I feel now is the time to explore more challenging left hand, moving away from the safe and comfort zone for notes that are around the five fingers.

This well known hymn tells of all creations of heaven and earth sing praises to the almighty Lord God who rules over all. I do hope that everyone will enjoy learning this hymn and give praises to our heavenly Lord.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God over all who rules eternity.

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

427. We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations 有一故事傳給萬邦

Can you remember any stories you have heard from your parents or grandparents? May be bed-time stories? Surely all of us must have, a few or many. Some of these stories may be funny, amazing or at times, scary. As the children of God, we all have the mission to tell to all nations about our Lord Jesus, who came to this world with love and light. The verses of this hymn tell of how He can help and transform us. The chorus is like believers marching from darkness to light, leading to where our Lord Jesus has prepared for all – the heavenly kingdom.

We’ve a story to tell to the nations,
That shall turn their hearts to the right,
A story of truth and sweetness,
A story of peace and light,
A story of peace and light.
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
And the dawning to noonday bright,
And Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth,
The kingdom of love and light.

We’ve a song to be sung to the nations,
That shall lift their hearts to the Lord;
A song that shall conquer evil
And shatter the spear and sword,
And shatter the spear and sword.
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
And the dawning to noonday bright,
And Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth,
The kingdom of love and light.

We’ve a message to give to the nations,
That the Lord Who reigneth above,
Hath sent us His Son to save us,
And show us that God is love,
And show us that God is love.
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
And the dawning to noonday bright,
And Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth,
The kingdom of love and light.

We’ve a Saviour to show to the nations,
Who the path of sorrow has trod,
That all of the world’s great people
Might come to the truth of God,
Might come to the truth of God.
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
And the dawning to noonday bright,
And Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth,
The kingdom of love and light.

Hymn 228 Keepers of the Word Are Blessed, also know as “All for Jesus”. This hymn has 4 lines. The two lines of the verse are the same, and the two lines of the chorus are also the same.

First, let us look at the harmonies of the first line. Bars 1,2 and 4 are chord I, Bar 3 is chord V.

Bar 1 and bar 2 > chord I, a bass note and chords, one minim and one crotchet.

Bar 3 > chord V, same pattern, a bass and 2 chords.

Bar 4 > same as the 1st 3 bars, a bass and 2 chords. This can go for line 2 as well.

Last session, we shared the idea of bringing the right-hand melody down an octave, and splitting the left hand playing a bass note follows by crossing over the right-hand, playing the 2 chords above the melody, like this

You can practice both ways, the normal, or the cross-hand.

This works either way, it is up to you what you would like to do, I am just giving you some ideas.

Now the chorus. Chords for this line are chord IV, chord I, chord V and chord I again. We will use arpeggios for this line.

Bar 9 > notice the melody has a dotted crotchet follows by 5 quavers, we could do 8 quavers, or less, may be a mixture of quavers or crotchets? In the example, we will use 2 quavers and a minim.

Bar 10 > melody has 2 minims, we will use 4 quavers tied over a crotchet, and finishes with another crotchet.

* You can see from bar 9 and bar 10, I am filling up the longer space, the dotted crotchet and minims, with some movement on the left-hand, remember the idea of movement is important!

Bar 11 > we can do the same as bar 9.

Bar 12 > we can play ascending arpeggios like bars 9, 10 and 11. However, it may be more interesting if we reverse and play a descending passage. This needs a bit of calculation and working out so that the descending passage finishes on a Bb at the beginning of the next bar, a mixture of arpeggio and scale.

The fourth line, harmonies are the same as the previous line, line 3. To have a stronger ending to conclude this hymn, we will use the bass note and chords idea that we have been using previously.

Bar 13 > chord IV, a bass note and 2 chords.

Bar 14 > chord I, a bass note and 2 chords.

Bar 15 > chord V, a bass note and 2 chords.

Bar 16 > chord I, we can do a reverse, a chord first, then a bass note.

So, take the 2 lines from the chorus, you may want to have a gentle start using arpeggios for the first line. Follows by a stronger ending using bass note and chords.

We can also do this

Play the bass note and chords for the 1st line, and arpeggios for the following line. It works equally well if we do the opposite. Beginning strong, rounding off with a softer ending. Of course, we then need to adjust the ending of these 2 lines to fit in correctly.

* Remember, these tutorial videos are providing ideas and suggestions for you to explore, there is really no right or wrong, you just have to try them out yourself.

To summarise, line 1 and 2, right-hand plays the melody an octave lower. We will do cross over left-hand accompaniment. Move right-hand melody back to normal for chorus, line 3 with arpeggio patterns. Line 4 will use the previous style of a bass note and chords.

Below are version A and version B which you can switch round to suit the need.

411. The Beautiful Garden of Prayer 美麗的禱告花園

Have you been to a beautiful garden before? There you will find peace and quiet with wonderful calm surrounding. This hymn tells of our Lord Jesus who is waiting in this beautiful garden. Gate opens and awaits our arrival where we can walk and talk with our Lord Jesus, telling Him all our burden and sorrow. He will listen tenderly and answer our prayers and requests. Why don’t we all go to that beautiful garden!

There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,
There’s a place that is wondrously fair;
For it glows with the light of His presence,
’Tis the beautiful garden of prayer.
O the beautiful garden, the garden of prayer,
O the beautiful garden of prayer;
There my Saviour awaits, and He opens the gates
To the beautiful garden of prayer.

There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,
And I go with my burden and care,
Just to learn from His lips words of comfort,
In the beautiful garden of prayer.
O the beautiful garden, the garden of prayer,
O the beautiful garden of prayer;
There my Saviour awaits, and He opens the gates
To the beautiful garden of prayer.

There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,
And He bids you to come meet Him there,
Just to walk and to talk with my Saviour,
In the beautiful garden of prayer.
O the beautiful garden, the garden of prayer,
O the beautiful garden of prayer;
There my Saviour awaits, and He opens the gates

256. There Shall Be Showers of Blessing 恩雨大降

Hallelujah, praise the Lord! There Shall Be Showers of Blessing by James McGranahan. His blessing revive and refresh us, just like abundant rain falling over the hills and valleys, making everything grow and flourish. The used of many quavers repetition in this hymn simulate showers of mercy and love from our Lord Jesus from above. We pray and He listens to our daily plead. May the Lord continue to shower His blessing bountifully to all believers.

There shall be showers of blessing: This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing, Sent from the Saviour above.
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing, Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys, Sound of abundance of rain.
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing: Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing, Now as on Jesus we call!
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing: Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing, Come, and now honour Thy Word.
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

Last few sessions, we started looking into how to add contrast to different lines. Today we will continue on that theme.

Hymn 264 Pass Me Not, O Gentle Saviour. This hymn has 4 lines. The melody and harmonies of Lines 1, 2 and 4 are more or less the same. Only the 1st line of the chorus is quite different.

First, let us look at the harmonies of the first line. Bar 1: chord I and IV, bar 2: Chord I, bar 3: chord V, bar 4: chord I.

Bar 1 > 1st 2 beats, chord I, bass note and a chord, 3rd and 4th beat, chord IV, bass note and a chord.

Bar 2 > chord I, we can do a bass note and 3 chord in crotchets, or bass note and chord in minims. I prefer a bass note, a minim chord and a crotchet chord. See how the accompaniment aligning with the melody, the chords are in-between, creating a better flow and movement for the music.

Bar 3 > chord V, same pattern, a bass and 2 chords.

Bar 4 > bass and 2 chords

This can go for lines 1, 2 and 4.

The harmonies for the 1st line of the chorus is chord I, chord IV, chord I and chord V. Rather than using the same style as previous lines, we are going to introduce quaver arpeggios. As there is one chord per bar, the maximum we can have would be 8 quavers. You can experiment this by trying out what it will sound like with different amount of quavers. For now, we will use 4 quavers and end with a minim for each bar.

Two points to bear in mind. “Firstly”, the spacing of the arpeggio needs to sound good, “Secondly”, it need to arrive on a note which will blend nicely with the melody.

For example, if we first play the arpeggio in bar 9: chord I, 5 notes in all, Ab C Eb Ab C. Bar 10: chord IV, Db F Ab Db F. When with the melody, you will notice the closeness of 1st 3 notes do not sound nice, sound quite low and deep. Also the last note lands on the same note as the right-hand melody.

Bar 9 > therefore, it is better to space out the start of the arpeggio like Ab Eb Ab C for chord I, finishes Eb with the C on the right, forming a 6th.

Bar 10 > respacing chord IV arpeggio Db Ab F Ab, finishes Db with F on the right, forming a 3rd.

Also, you can see, although the starting note for each chord is different, they arrived more or less at the same region.

Bar 11 > We can do the same as bars 9 and 10

Bar 12 > we can bring in another contrast, instead of ascending arpeggio, we will have descending arpeggio. Play the melody on the 1st beat, then a descending arpeggio. Do your calculation so that it will arrive on Ab on the 1st beat on the following bar.

So if we go back to line one:

Remember we mentioned that we can do the same style for lines 1, 2 and 4 because they are similar? May be we can find another way so that we are not doing the same thing for 3 times. One of my favourite is this:

Moving the melody not up, but down an octave. Keeping the bass note still at the bottom, left hand crosses over the melody to do the chords. We can use this idea when we play the 2 lines for the verse.

To summarise > line 1 and 2, right-hand plays the melody an octave lower, will do cross over left-hand accompaniment. Move right-hand melody back to normal for chorus, line 3 with arpeggio patterns. Line 4 will use the previous style of a bass note and chords.

After going through what we can do for each line, this hymn will now look like:

I hope that you enjoy go through and learning this hymn together. Stay tune for the next session. Bye!

243. I Am Thine, O Lord 引我更親近

Another well known hymn classic we often sing in church. We are His chosen people and we should be able to hear His voice. He speaks to us through sermons and His words in the Bible, declaring His love and mercy to all those believe and follow His way. When we kneel down to pray, we draw ourselves closer to Him. Commune like friend with friend. This hymn is not difficult to learn. Left hand has more notes and chords making this hymn more richer in sound. Why not try it yourself.

Download Sheet Music 下載樂譜

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith, And be closer drawn to Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, And my will be lost in Thine.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

O the pure delight of a single hour That before Thy throne I spend;
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend!
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

There are depths of love that I cannot know Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach Till I rest in peace with Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Today, we will use hymn 303 Heaven Is Coming as an example.

As before, if we just look at the 1st 2 beats of each bar, they are all chord I – E G# B. If we highlight the 3rd G# in blue, so either the melody or the accompaniment will have the third G#, but not both.

Bar 1 > melody is G#, so left hand chord will use E and B.

Bar 2 > melody is B, left hand will use E and G#.

Bar 3 > melody is G#, this time the bass note is B, so a B for the bass.

End of bar 3 to bar 4 is called a cadence, just like punctuation in writing, we will use one more chord in this bar to indicate it is a cadence. This is chord V with a 7th, left hand will use D# and A.

Bar 4 > melody is E, left hand will use E and G#.

Same harmonies as line 1 for bars 5 to 8, this time we will use what we have learnt previously, left hand plays a bass follows by a 2 notes chord.

As line 1 and line 2 are exactly the same, we can actually bring in more contrast by playing an octave higher for line 1. Lyric for line 1 says heaven is coming, so playing an octave higher will help to illustrate this point.

Lyric for line 2 says be a good tree bearing good fruits, bringing the melody back down to normal is like planting the tree firmly on the ground.

First look at the harmonies, b9 is IV, b10 is I, b11 has a new chord C# E G# is chord VI, follows by a V, b12 is chord I again. Now, highlight all the thirds of each chord, basically, if the melody has the third, the accompaniment will not have the third, and vice versa.

1st line of chorus, bars 9 to 12 tells of Jesus’ great atoning forgiving blood, we will use Staccato quavers to echo us jumping with joy and happiness.

Bar 9 > A and E first, on the 3rd beat change the E to C#.

Bar 10 > as there is no third G# on the melody, left hand can have E and G#.

Bar 11 > 2 chords C# and G# follows by B and D#.

Bar 12 > E and B follows by E and G#.

2nd line of the chorus, bars 13 to 16, we will use the bass note and 3 notes chord.

Bar 13 > chord IV, bass note A and a chord.

Bar 14 > chord I, same again bass note E and a chord.

Bar 15 > adds an extra chord for the final cadence to make it sounds complete, chord I with bass B and a chord, follows by chord V, a dominant 7th with an A.

Bar 16 > chord I, reverse, a chord first then a bass E.

After going through what we can do for each line, the score will be like this
