256. There Shall Be Showers of Blessing 恩雨大降

Hallelujah, praise the Lord! There Shall Be Showers of Blessing by James McGranahan. His blessing revive and refresh us, just like abundant rain falling over the hills and valleys, making everything grow and flourish. The used of many quavers repetition in this hymn simulate showers of mercy and love from our Lord Jesus from above. We pray and He listens to our daily plead. May the Lord continue to shower His blessing bountifully to all believers.

There shall be showers of blessing: This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing, Sent from the Saviour above.
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing, Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys, Sound of abundance of rain.
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing: Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing, Now as on Jesus we call!
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

There shall be showers of blessing: Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing, Come, and now honour Thy Word.
Showers of blessing, Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy drops round us are falling, But for the showers we plead.

243. I Am Thine, O Lord 引我更親近

Another well known hymn classic we often sing in church. We are His chosen people and we should be able to hear His voice. He speaks to us through sermons and His words in the Bible, declaring His love and mercy to all those believe and follow His way. When we kneel down to pray, we draw ourselves closer to Him. Commune like friend with friend. This hymn is not difficult to learn. Left hand has more notes and chords making this hymn more richer in sound. Why not try it yourself.

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith, And be closer drawn to Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, And my will be lost in Thine.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

O the pure delight of a single hour That before Thy throne I spend;
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend!
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

There are depths of love that I cannot know Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach Till I rest in peace with Thee.
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Today, we will use hymn 303 Heaven Is Coming as an example.

As before, if we just look at the 1st 2 beats of each bar, they are all chord I – E G# B. If we highlight the 3rd G# in blue, so either the melody or the accompaniment will have the third G#, but not both.

Bar 1 > melody is G#, so left hand chord will use E and B.

Bar 2 > melody is B, left hand will use E and G#.

Bar 3 > melody is G#, this time the bass note is B, so a B for the bass.

End of bar 3 to bar 4 is called a cadence, just like punctuation in writing, we will use one more chord in this bar to indicate it is a cadence. This is chord V with a 7th, left hand will use D# and A.

Bar 4 > melody is E, left hand will use E and G#.

Same harmonies as line 1 for bars 5 to 8, this time we will use what we have learnt previously, left hand plays a bass follows by a 2 notes chord.

As line 1 and line 2 are exactly the same, we can actually bring in more contrast by playing an octave higher for line 1. Lyric for line 1 says heaven is coming, so playing an octave higher will help to illustrate this point.

Lyric for line 2 says be a good tree bearing good fruits, bringing the melody back down to normal is like planting the tree firmly on the ground.

First look at the harmonies, b9 is IV, b10 is I, b11 has a new chord C# E G# is chord VI, follows by a V, b12 is chord I again. Now, highlight all the thirds of each chord, basically, if the melody has the third, the accompaniment will not have the third, and vice versa.

1st line of chorus, bars 9 to 12 tells of Jesus’ great atoning forgiving blood, we will use Staccato quavers to echo us jumping with joy and happiness.

Bar 9 > A and E first, on the 3rd beat change the E to C#.

Bar 10 > as there is no third G# on the melody, left hand can have E and G#.

Bar 11 > 2 chords C# and G# follows by B and D#.

Bar 12 > E and B follows by E and G#.

2nd line of the chorus, bars 13 to 16, we will use the bass note and 3 notes chord.

Bar 13 > chord IV, bass note A and a chord.

Bar 14 > chord I, same again bass note E and a chord.

Bar 15 > adds an extra chord for the final cadence to make it sounds complete, chord I with bass B and a chord, follows by chord V, a dominant 7th with an A.

Bar 16 > chord I, reverse, a chord first then a bass E.

After going through what we can do for each line, the score will be like this

90. Count Your Blessings 數算恩典

A really simple arrangement of this well-known hymn Count Your Blessings. Keeping the flow the the right hand melody, the running quavers tell of the blessings and grace we all received from our Lord Jesus. Whereas the easy chords on the left hand affirms that these are from our almighty and loving God in heaven. The blessings and grace from our Lord definitely help, encourage and strengthen our faith towards Him. Have you regularly reflect and ponder through what God has done for you?

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev’ry doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings, wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

152. The Lord Will Provide 主必預備

Hymn 152 The Lord Will Provide by a well known hymn writer Philip Phillips. This arrangement starts off slow and freely, resembling a time when we were not sure what our next step will be. Anxious, worries and troubles without finding a solution. As time goes on, we remember our almighty and compassionate Lord Jesus whom we can rely and trust will open a way for us. Through earnest and deep prayers, we are reassured by His words and His constant abiding love. We can finally let go and count on our Lord Jesus who will always provide. Have you experienced this in your life? Is your outcome and belief is “The Lord Will Provide”?

This time we will look into G major. Before we go any further, it would be great if we go through and practice the possible chord combinations for each of the chord I, IV and V.

We will use hymn 65 Close to Thee as an exercise for creating a piano accompaniment. This hymn has 4 lines, rather than using the style bass note follows by a 2 or 3 notes chord as previous sessions, we are going to introduce some contrast through each line. Again, work out the harmony bar by bar, decide which chord to use.

In a chord [1st, 3rd and 5th], say G B and D chord I, the note “B” balances the chord, without it, it will sound bare and empty. Most of the time, if the melody has the 3rd, the accompaniment can do without and vice versa. Occasionally, leaving out the 3rd will make it sound different and special too.

Line 1 > a simple chord to accompany the right hand melody. e.g. bar 1 – 1st 2 beats GDGB is chord I, using a chord of a fifth will blend nicely with the B on the melody. Similarly on the 3rd bear, DADF# is chord V with F# on the melody, again a fifth will fit well. Bars 2 and 3 – chord I as before, this time put a chord with a B on the left hand. Bar 4 – round off with a fifth.

Line 2> break up the chord by using 2 to 3 single notes. e.g. bar 5 use a crotchet and minim rather than a chord as bar 1.

# For now, if there are one or two odd notes that are not in the chord, but the  majority of notes are, 80/90%, then it is OK to use that chord. e.g. ignore the F natural on bar 5, DBA on bar 6, etc..

Line 3 > bass note follows by a 2 notes chord

Line 4 > bass note follows by a 3 notes chord. Round off the hymn with the opposite, chord than a bass note.

So after working out what to do for each bar and line, the outcome will be as below

430. Shall We Gather at the River? 我們聚集生命河邊

And he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb (Rev 22:1). When we finally lay every burden down and reach the end of our life journey on earth, the promised heavenly kingdom awaits us. God has prepared a robe and a crown for us. There we shall sing praises and worship our almighty God forever. The relax and joyous melody definitely brings us closer to our Lord Jesus, hopping and swinging along the clear crystal water of life.

Shall we gather at the river, Where bright angel feet have trod;
With its crystal tide forever Flowing by the throne of God?
Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.

On the margin of the river, Washing up its silver spray,
We will walk and worship ever, All the happy golden day.
Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.

Ere we reach the shining river, Lay we ev’ry burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver, And provide a robe and crown.
Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.

Soon we’ll reach the shining river, Soon our pilgrimage will cease,
Soon our happy hearts will quiver With the melody of peace.
Yes, we’ll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river,
Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.

Last session, We looked into how to create a piano accompaniment base on the harmony of the hymn, playing the right hand main melody, with left hand playing a bass note follows by a two notes chord in each bar. This time, we will do the same by with a three notes chord instead.

Sticking with this idea, the accompaniment we are looking into creating will be

  1. Three beats in a bar
  2. Right hand plays the main melody
  3. Left hand plays a bass note on the first beat follows by a three notes chord on the second
  4. A rest on the third beat except the penultimate bar before end of a phrase

This time, using chords I, IV and V in Bb major. The combination of possible chords follow by the bass note will be as follow:

Familiarise this style by practicing the left hand; bass note to each of these chord. This will boost up your confidence in playing in this style.

This time a well known hymn classic 51b Rock of Ages. Analysing bar by bar, first group the notes vertically and work out the harmony. Which chord out of I, IV and V to use. Starting that bar with the bass note follows by one the the three possible chords to go with it. Be careful not to use a chord that is rather high that may clashes with the right hand melody, nor too low towards the left that may sound grumpy. All these need practice, trials and errors.

Bar 11, we use the extra Eb link to chord V; FAC. This special chord is called dominant 7th. If we add the Eb in, this will enrich the sound of the chord. Splendid to conclude the hymn with a dominant 7th chord on the penultimate bar.

The end result will be

284. Send the Light 發出福音真光

Jesus calls us to rescue and save the souls of this world. Jesus is the light, we too as His children have the duty to go into this world to shine for Him. Bringing the good tiding of perfect salvation gospel to all corners of the world. This light and cheerful melody with the dotted rhythm accompaniment reminds and encourages us to rise and “send the blessed gospel light”.

There’s a call comes ringing o’er the restless wave,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
There are souls to rescue, there are souls to save,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

We have heard the Macedonian call today,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
And a golden off’ring at the cross we lay,
“Send the light! Send the light!”
Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

Let us not grow weary in the work of love,
Send the light! Send the light!
Let us gather jewels for a crown above,
Send the light! Send the light!
Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine from shore to shore!
Send the light, the blessed gospel light;
Let it shine forevermore!

Hymn 62 is one the the few hymns in our hymn book that does not begin with the traditional SATB four parts harmony. This simplify arrangement comprises of right hand main melody, with left hand playing a bass note follows by a two notes chord in each bar.

With this idea in mind, the simple accompaniment we are looking into will be based on the above

  1. Three beats in a bar
  2. Right hand plays the main melody
  3. Left hand plays a bass note on the first beat follows by a two notes chord on the second
  4. A rest on the third beat except the penultimate bar

Imagine we are in F major, using chords I, IV and V. The combination of possible 2 notes chord follows by the bass note will be as follow:

Familiarise this style by practicing the left hand; bass note to each of these chord. This will boost up your confidence in playing in this style.

We will use a short example to start with. Hymn 252 is in F major. Analysing bar by bar, first group the notes vertically and work out the harmony. Which chord out of I, IV and V to use. Starting that bar with the bass note follows by one the the four possible chord to go with it. Be careful not to use a chord that is rather high that may clashes with the right hand melody, nor too low towards the left that may sound grumpy. All these need practice, trials and errors.
