This hymn describes the love of our heavenly Father who sends his beloved only son Jesus to save, redeem and reveal His great love to everyone. He has pardoned our wrongs and showed His great mercy in granting us eternal life in the future. This hymn starts with the cello playing the main theme in the original key of C major, changes its tonality to minor depicting out wrongs and sinful state, modulates to its relative Eb major bringing once again hope of being saved, and finally returns to the main theme in its initial key of C major. Plenty of contrasts in mood and character for this wonderful hymn.

Praise the Lord! Hymn 272 The Comforter Has Come was composed by a well known Irish-born American hymnwriter William J. Kirkpatrick. As members of the Ture Jesus Church, we have a duty and mission to spread this good tidings to all corners of the world. After proclaiming that the Comforter Has Come in the first verse, this arrangement for clarinet and piano has a variation in the middle section leading to the climax reprise of the main theme.

While studying in London, I flew over to Los Angeles in December 1986 where my parents were working in the IA office in Garden Grove. We went to an evening orchestral concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra playing Korngold Violin Concerto and Dvorak Symphony no. 8. The concert began with Webber’s Der Freischütz Overture. After a few bars of the introduction, a French horn quartet emerged calmly with this peaceful melody. In my head went, “hey, I knew this, that is our hymn 231 My Jesus, as Thou Wilt”.
French Horn has a mellow, warm and gentle sound. It suites this hymn very well as we humbly ask our Lord Jesus to strengthen our faith and guide our every steps in life, whether through sorrow or joy that His will be done!
